Kohl eyeliner is history’s oldest known cosmetic. It is connected through out time and around the world from North Africa, Central to East Asia, and the Mediterranean. Traditionally named ‘kajal’ and made from the mineral galena, kohl was first used by the ancient Egyptians. It was known that the mineral galena was crushed and mixed with precious stones and metals like pearls, rubies, emeralds, silver, and gold leaves. The shade of one’s kohl eyeliner denoted class status; the darkest and most high quality kohl was only reserved for the elite. It was such an important part of one’s life and society that many ancient Egyptians were buried with a pouch of kohl by their side.
Today our Kohl eyeliner isn’t derived from the once coveted galena, as galena is a lead based mineral. Since the FDA prohibits the production of kohl cosmetics using traditional methods, we find the safest pigment and mix it with the richest oils to produce a kohl eyeliner worthy of Cleopatra. In a range of colors that nod to a time when kohl was made with jewels; our green, blue, violet, and gold eyeliner pencils are completely eye catching. Kohl eyeliners are not your ordinary eyeliner because it has years of expectations to live up to. The quality may be superb, but you don’t need to be royalty to enjoy our products! We want our makeup to inspire and ignite a passion for beauty globally, just as kohl once did in ancient times.
